It’s that time of year again:
Card brands are updating their interchange rates and card association fees.

 

After 2 years of pushing most changes out, since April 2020 due to the COVID 19 pandemic, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and Amex are all implementing increases this spring.

Interchange and card association fees are set by the card brands and paid to the issuing banks or the card brands. Any merchant that accepts credit and debit cards pays these fees in one way or another. The changes that apply to the Vacation Rental and Lodging industries are below.Credit Card Brands Have Changed Interchange Rates

MasterCard and Visa are increasing interchange rates for many Card Not Present (CNP) categories. These increases will generally affect merchants who take card payments online or over the phone.

MasterCard and Visa are implementing increases in several categories for merchants categorized under Real Estate coding. Many Vacation Rental Property Managements merchants are categorized under Real Estate for at least some of their card types. 

MasterCard is decreasing interchange for some debit card categories for Real Estate merchants.

Visa is increasing interchange for merchants categorized under Travel/Lodging codes.

Discover is increasing their Assessment Fees from 0.13% to 0.14%. This new rate is assessed on all Discover card volume.

American Express is increasing their Network Fee (similar to Assessments) for merchants using their OptBlue program. The new fee assessed on all Amex OptBlue volume will be 0.165%, up from 0.16%. They will also add a new per transaction fee of $0.02.
